Signed Bisque Kewpie Doll

RARE and wonderful c 1910s Authentic Painted Signed Bisque Kewpie Doll with the creator, Rose O’Neill’s last name marked on the bottom of the kewpie’s foot. This incredible collectible has the sweetest rosy cheeks, baby wings, and moveable arms. It is 4 1/2″ tall and 1″ wide (including arms, it is more like 2″ wide). Condition wise, it is in wonderful shape. There is a very fine squiggle mark on its forehead that likely has been there since manufacture: it looks like the artist left this mark when hand painting the eyebrows because it’s the exact same brown colour as the brows Otherwise, it is in excellent condition with no crazing, chips, or cracks. It is truly a scarce and wonderful treasure!

A bit more on Rose O’Neill, the inventor of these adorable little cherubs:

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on June 25, 1874, Rose Cecil O’Neill was an American artist who created a magical creature called a Kewpie who was modeled after Cupid, the Roman God of Love.

“The Kewpies were fairy-like babies with a top-knot head, a wide smile, and sidelong eyes. They were both impish and kind and solved all kinds of problems in humorous ways. O’Neill described them as “a sort of little round fairy whose one idea is to teach people to be merry and kind at the same time.”

The idea for the Kewpies came to O’Neill in a dream. “They were all over my room, on my bed, and one perched on my hand. I awoke seeing them everywhere.”
